Project objectives

Select and modify a validated Quality of Life measure for knee pain and dysfunction due to arthritis of the knee for routine use within the NHS. This measure, together with a risk prediction tool, will help predict the outcome for the individual patient from knee surgery based upon available research and be used to develop shared decision-making tools. The measure will also be used as an initial benchmark for routine, patient centred surgical outcome measurement.

Please note for ease of reference the abbreviation 'KRDA' is being used for the term 'Knee Replacement Decision Aid' throughout the website.

An NHS Exemplar project with the NHS Institute
Project duration: November 2007 - April 2009

"The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement supports the NHS to transform healthcare for patients and the public by rapidly developing and spreading new ways of working, new technology and world-class leadership.

Evidence shows that involving patients in decision making improves their health outcomes and can decrease the need for evasive surgery. The NHS Institute has commissioned this project to bring together key thinkers in the field of knee surgery to develop informed decision tools for knee surgery patients and healthcare professionals. The tools will be tested to see if patient experience and outcomes can be better if the alternative treatment options are considered."
